Photo Session Wardrobe Guide
COORDINATE…BUT DON’T MATCH
It’s important to coordinate your outfits, not match them. Instead, your group should pick 3-4 colors that complement each other. Medium tones are better than black or white…think soft blues, greens, pinks. If in doubt, bring 2-3 options for your shoot so we can mix things up if necessary! Color is very important here.
PICK CLOTHES YOU ENJOY
Even if you want to dress up for your photos, you should wear something realistic for you. If you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, your face will show it. Finding an outfit that makes you feel confident is the best way to get strong photos. Even something subtle as a favorite shoe can give you a nice boost. And it’s tempting to wear something new, but never pick clothes you haven’t tried on first!
MINIMIZE PATTERNS & AVOID LOGOS
Some patterns can add to a photo, but most take away from them. Distracting or clashing patterns can make a photo look messy. If you want to use a pattern in your photos but you’re unsure if it will work, only plan to use your patterned piece in a few select photos. Also, don’t wear visible logos. Wearing words of any kind will take your eye away from you and turn the focus to your clothes.
SIMPLIFY ACCESSORIES
Accessories can be a fun way to add color and personality to a photo, but limit the accessories you choose. Too many accessories can be distracting. One signature piece is a strong choice. Having said that, some people’s style defies the rules…the MOST important thing is that you look like yourself!
LAYER & TEXTURE
Adding layers and texture is a great way to express some style if you’re trying to veer away from the basics. Cardigans, vests and opened button-up shirts make great layers.
PICK A BACKUP OUTFIT
You never know what might happen at your session. You could lose a button or spill a coffee. Better safe than sorry!
NATURAL HAIR & MAKEUP LOOK BEST
Avoid getting a new haircut right before your photo shoot. Your hair and makeup should be natural and neutral. Pick colors that complement both your skin tone and your outfit. If you have a blemish, don’t hesitate to use a little coverup stick… but if you can’t, don’t let it worry you, your photographer can take care of momentary skin blemishes or flyaway hairs in post-production!
CHECK YOUR CLOTHES!
Check your clothes before your session and make sure they look crisp. They should be clean and wrinkle-free. You don’t want to ruin your photo session because you forgot to iron your shirt!
SEND YOUR QUESTIONS!
Leading up to your session I am always available to look over outfits and give suggestions. Don’t hesitate to send me a snapshot of your planned outfit if you have any concerns or questions if it will photograph well!
